(Communicated with the author privately on the CSS list, but posting here as well to address this in a public manner.)

The proposal as written is somewhat unnecessary. Most real-life scenarios where this is needed (the ever-present multi-column layout that you use as your example is one) can be handled right now in modern browsers (including the newly release IE8) with the table-* display types. Wrap the multiple columns in a container div set to display:table, then make the columns display:table-cell and they'll automatically stretch to the same height.

Now, using a container div isn't ideal, but thems the breaks when you try to use CSS, which is still not quite a layout language, for layout purposes. (Though this is still way better than the *horrendous* float-based hacks common these days.) Some of the new proposals will help out with that. Template Layout, frex, is *designed* to add major layout capabilities to CSS in a super-simple, easy-to-understand way.

You vaguely disparage Template Layout as using "ASCII art", but seriously, don't knock it til you try it. It's *awesome* in use, and ridiculously easy. (I'm currently using Alex Deviera's js implementation of it on a few toy sites, and *man* does it make layout easy.)
